Top Tips for Installing an Aftermarket Manual Transmission

Transmission installation isn’t the easiest task, but it’s not impossible. With our help, you can effectively service your vehicle. Check out these top tips for more information on installing an aftermarket manual transmission!

Create a Safe Environment

Before touching your vehicle, get in a safe environment. Ensure the vehicle is on the ground (not on a hill or slope). You need access to the bottom of your car, and unstable ground makes it difficult to install a transmission.

Furthermore, it’s important to have the right tools on hand. Of course, the manual transmission is the main component, but tools like jack stands, mounting bolts, and a torque wrench are essential too.

Grab Jack Stands To Position Vehicle

After disconnecting the negative battery cable, use a floor jack to lift your vehicle. Afterward, place two jack stands under the frame’s rear. Put two more jack stands under the front of the frame, making it four jack stands in total. Doing so creates better access to the underside of the vehicle.

Create a Clear Path for Installation

Another tip for installing an aftermarket manual transmission is to create a clear path. A clear path makes this process easier and grants access to the plate opening. With this tip, you’ll see that the floor jack and jack stands are helpful. Maintain the path by keeping tools to the side (until needed).

Push Input Shaft Towards Clutch Opening

After creating a clear path and adjusting the transmission accordingly, it’s time to push the transmission input shaft toward the clutch’s opening. Push the shaft toward the pressure plate. You can now align the splines of your input shaft with the clutch splines. For spline alignment help, turn the transmission on its side axis (turn the side tilt knobs on the jack).

Install the Mounting Bolts

You can install the manual transmission’s mounting bolts into the bell housing threads. Next, tighten the bolts with a torque wrench. Follow your manual’s specifications for the tightness requirements of the mounting bolts.
